Conducting Summer School Level Descriptions

 

BEGINNER (LEVEL 1) For complete beginners. This course focuses on good posture and the foundation of conducting technique. Participants will develop the skills and confidence to conduct effectively using primarily unison and two-part material.

FOUNDATION (LEVEL 2) For beginners with some qualification or background in music who may have elementary conducting experience. This level develops the fundamentals of conducting technique with emphasis on communication, gesture and vocal training.

TRANSITION (LEVEL 3) For those with either previous training or experience in conducting, who are ready to move beyond the fundamentals. This level further develops the foundation of conducting technique and vocal training, using more challenging music, and with attention to style, interpretation and rehearsal technique. Participants are expected to be familiar with the pieces before the course.

INTERMEDIATE B (LEVEL 4) For conductors with good musicianship skills, experienced in working with choirs and/or who have had previous tuition in conducting. This level develops conducting technique and vocal training, using more challenging music and score analysis, with increased attention to style, interpretation and rehearsal technique. Participants are expected to be familiar with the pieces before the course.

INTERMEDIATE A (LEVEL 5) For conductors with very good musicianship skills, experienced in choral singing or working with choirs and/or who have had previous tuition in conducting. This level further develops conducting technique and vocal training, using challenging music and score analysis, with increased attention to style, interpretation and rehearsal technique. Participants are expected to be fully familiar with the pieces before the course.

ADVANCED (LEVEL 6) For conductors with considerable experience, excellent musicianship skills and good vocal technique who have already studied conducting to a high level. Applicants are expected to have a strong conducting and rehearsal technique with interest in further development and refinement using challenging music and score analysis. Participants are expected to be fully familiar with all of the pieces (background, style, analysis, correct pronunciation, knowledge of each vocal line etc).
