Irish Youth Choir Conductor-In-Training

Sing Ireland and the Irish Youth Choir, under Artistic Director Bernie Sherlock, invite applications for Conductor-in-Training for the duration of the IYC Summer Residential Course in the University of Limerick 5-13 July 2024. The Conductor-in-Training plays a full part in all IYC activities and prepares selected scores as a conductor. They are provided with the opportunity to conduct the IYC in one piece in the choir's summer performances.

This mentoring opportunity is open to applications from musicians in the early stages of their conducting careers. The successful candidate will be an experienced choral singer, will have high-level musicianship skills, will have received tuition in conducting, and be experienced in working with choirs. Candidates must be aged 35 years or under in 2024. Applications should be submitted by the 30 May 2024.

 

Interested conductors should submit a CV, a short video of approximately 3-5 minutes of conducting footage and a letter of application outlining their musical background, conducting experience, and suitability for the position.

2023 Conductor-in-Training: Mary Walsh

Mary is a Dublin-based conductor who has completed an MA in Conducting and a BMus degree in the MTU Cork School of Music, Cork. In 2022 & 2023, Mary was a finalist in Dublin Feis Ceol Conducting Competition where she conducted the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

In 2022, Mary was selected to conduct the National Symphony Orchestra in the finale concert of the National Concert Hall Female Conductor Programme. In 2021, she was selected to take part in the Sorrell Women’s Conducting Programme in the Royal Academy of Music, London under the guidance of Sian Edwards and Alice Farnham.

Mary had worked as assistant conductor to conductor Elaine Kelly on the opera production of Horse Ape Bird. A children’s opera produced by Irish National Opera, Music Generation Kildare, Music Generation Meath and Solstice Arts Centre. Mary was also assistant conductor to Stephen Barlow on the opera Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland produced by Opera Collective Ireland.

As a singer, Mary sings soprano I in New Dublin Voices directed by Bernie Sherlock. Mary is a vocal coach at Newpark Academy of Music and conducts the Newpark Junior Choir. She is also the conductor of the Dublin Welsh Male Voice Choir and they have performed in venues such as the National Concert Hall, Dublin and National Opera House, Wexford.

2022 Conductor-in-Training: Emily Cox

Emily is a graduate of the Bachelor in Music Education programme in Trinity College Dublin and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, graduating with a First-Class Honours with Gold Medal Award. She is now pursuing a Masters in Choral Studies in DCU. She was previously Interim Conductor of Cantairí Óga Átha Cliath, a member of New Dublin Voices and Irish Youth Choir and has performed with EuroChoir, Revoice International Ensemble, Dublin Youth Choir Singers, Ardee Concert Band and RIAM Chorale.

As a participant in the National Concert Hall’s Female Conductor Programme 2019-22 she conducted the National Symphony Orchestra as part of the finale event in January 2022. During their 2022 session, she was the Conductor-in-Training of Irish Youth Choir.

Emily is passionate about music education. She is Head of the Music Department at Lusk Community College and has been involved in education initiatives such as Quavers to Quadratics, a music and science programme for primary school pupils presented by the NCH, TCD and UCD. She is also a member of the Kodály Ireland committee, which provides professional development opportunities for music teachers and musicians.
